SERVICE
Scope
Biodiversity Management
consults on TEM designs (e.g. Analogue Forestry) with mining and natural
resource companies, private forestry and agriculture and other primary producers to provide crop enhancement,
sustainable investment and green image.
1.
Crop Enhancement
- Analogue Forestry designs
account for natural variability within pest/pathogen populations, local and
regional climate and the growth and productivity of commodity species.
Monoculture crops may be enhanced by shelter-belt arrangements at the
extremities or in a uniform matrix throughout the body of the primary crop.
2.
Sustainable Investment
- Return on investment
will occur within 2-3 years due to inclusion of early sere herb crops (e.g.
flower crops). These early returns can be sustained as new
products at 5-10 years (e.g. fruit and nut crops) come into production until
the entire ecosystem (including furniture timbers after 20 years) is
contributing to the economy. Therefore, a range of crop production cycles of
between 2 and 40 years can be sustained within a naturally balanced and
optimised ecosystem.
3.
Green Image
- An Analogue Forestry
ecosystem can be created that provides for not only commercial production
but also the specific needs of wildlife and threatened species. In
additional to high biodiversity analogue forests store more carbon than
plantation forestry (due to the creation of multi-layered canopy and a
healthy soil ecosystem). Under such conditions Analogue Forestry may return
a greater premium of carbon credits.
Primary Services
Biodiversity Management
provides its clients with Design, Training and Marketing consultative
services:
A. Design of
Analogue Forests
- Analogue Forests are
designed with all stakeholders to build in cultural relevance and
sustainability on economic, social and environmental levels. A preliminary
site visit is undertaken to evaluate the landscapes potential to support
production. From this a framework is developed upon which a detailed design
can then be prepared. The specific goals of the landholder and the outcomes
of each component species are then detailed. Biodiversity Management
consultants apply the decision model and use techniques such as SEEn
(Social, Economic and Environmental) Analysis to ensure sustainability
B. Training and
Interpretation
- Workshops on how best to
apply the principles of Analogue Forestry are recommended during both the
design and implementation phases. Formal lectures and seminars on Analogue
Forestry are also performed by Biodiversity Management consultants
throughout Australia and southeast Asia.
C. Marketing Support
to Forest Gardeners
- Biodiversity Management
consultants advise on how best to monitor and implement quality systems that
guarantee level A standards of Forest Garden Products. Facilitate the
coordinated harvesting, shipment and marketing of products from analogue
forests.
Secondary Services
Biodiversity Management
provides its clients with two subsidiary consultative services:
D. Flora and Fauna
Survey
- Comprehensive flora and
fauna surveys are necessary to evaluate the landscape's ecosystem during the
design phase of Analogue Forestry. Biodiversity Management undertakes
comprehensive flora and fauna survey, including assessment of soil fauna and
soil physicochemistry.
E. Whole Farm
Planning
- As an integrated design,
the conceptual plans that are created during our consultations marry the
economic, social and environmental aspects of the farm landscape. By careful
planning the needs of the whole farm business are satisfied by specific
outcomes.
