NEWSRecent Publications in Analogue Forestry The November 2000 issue of
"The Planter" (a journal of the International Society of Planters
Malaysia) published a detailed paper on Analogue Forestry and its ability to
promote biological diversity. The paper provides a valuable reference on
holistic design models and how to apply total ecosystem management approaches
for biodiversity. It defined analogue forestry in the context of traditional and
contemporary land-use and outlined strategies for its integration in plantation
agriculture. It also outlined two case studies (one temperate and one tropical)
that described how the technique was used for sustainable investment and crop
enhancement. Other important publications on Analogue Forestry are listed below:
Workshops and other Analogue Forestry activitiesDatabase The Environmental Management Unit (Monash University) has developed an Analogue Forestry database that distils the processes and the elements that are used to develop successful projects. A successful test the pilot Analogue Forestry database occurred in late 2000. Field operatives in Total Ecosystem Management projects that wish to access the database should contact info@biodiversitymanagement.com.au to obtain further information. Carbon Forests A series of forums was recently hosted at Forest Research Institute of Malaysia to discuss how Malaysia could address its responsibilities regarding the Greenhouse effect and the Kyoto Protocol. Biodiversity Management was invited to present Analogue Forestry as an effective solution to ameliorate global Carbon dioxide emissions. The proposed strategy was to preserve physiological or "Old carbon" found in forest soils, minimise logging of forests that contain hardwood species, and undertake extensive revegetation schemes that reintroduce the health of the natural ecosystem to the landscape. Distance Learning A new course on Analogue Forestry has opened for enrolments. Refer to Biodiversity Management Interpretation Services for information.
